Nathalie Emmanuel
Nathalie Joanne Emmanuel(born 2 March 1989) is an English actress. Emmanuel began her stage career in the late 90s. She was cast in parts in West End musicals like The Lion King. She began her acting career in 2006 , playing Sasha Valentine, a soap opera. Then she was a part of numerous British television series which included the sequel Maze Runner. Her mother is Dominican. Her father is half Saint Lucian as well as half English. She has an older sister. Emmanuel remembered her mother's first notice of her passion for acting and her dream to become an actor when she was a student at St Hilda's School. This school shut down in 2014 and changed into Westcliff High School. She said that she first noticed her interest in acting when she was only three years old. Her mother advised her to enroll in dancing, singing as well as acting classes. In the West End production of The Lion King, Young Nala played the role as Young Nala. The following year she was made a part in Game of Thrones as Missandei, Daenerys Targaryen’s interpreter. She shared with Jimmy Kimmel that she learned about the role during her work as an assistant in the clothing store. Emmanuel was named an actor in 2015, after winning the part. Missandei was the sole woman of color in the show's cast. Her death scene when she was locked up was not a hit with viewers. Emmanuel later said to The Guardian that the reaction to the death of Missandei was intense because she was the only one. I think that a lot of people who felt marginalized or excluded felt a connection with Missandei, or felt represented by her. When she passed away, and in the manner that she died - it was extremely painful for those who were like, 'Wait you're not! This is how they're going make the sole woman of color.
